Question: can I directly connect (server chassis <-> disk chassis) two 8-port HBAs (i.e., not use an expander in the disk chassis)? I will only have 8 HDD in the disk chassis.

LSI 1068e, disable auto-add auto-rebuild?

$

Hi all,

Thanks in no small part to information from this forum, I picked up a few SAS3444E controllers on ebay, mostly for home lab and media servers. Overall, they've been working out well, and have provided great bang for the buck.

One of them, however, is in a remote colo facility that I won't have access to for a few days. It has 2 drives in RAID 1 and one of the drives is failing. The problem is the disk is being repeatedly failed, removed, and then later re-detected, added back into the array, and re-synced. The box has lsiutil on it, and I've tried 'Offline physical disk', 'Fail physical disk', and 'Delete physical disk'. I also changed the Auto configuration to No in volume settings, which I thought might prevent the auto-rebuild. None of this seems to have had much if any effect.

How do I keep it from adding that same bad disk back into the array until I can get the disk replaced?

btw, anybody know of any actual documentation for lsiutil? I've found some documentation online, but none that describes the difference between offline, fail, and delete pysical disk, for instance.

TIA!

Any one using Samsung 840 Pro with LSI 9260-4i or LSI 9260-8i
without any problem. I would like to know before making a final
decision.

IBM M5014 = LSI 9260 they are similar price brand new in the box

It's hard to find IBM M5014 with cheaper price including ebay
so it's easier for me to find other option which is LSI 9260

PCI-E lanes and versions question

$

So, I know the different versions of PCI-E (1.0, 1.0a, 2.0, 3.0) are all interoperable (in theory anyway), and that a lot of server/workstation motherboards have physical x8 slots, but only x4 lanes available to it. What happens if you combine those scenarios?

For instance, my motherboard has an x4 PCI-E 2.0 in a physical x8 slot. What would happen if a put an x8 PCI-E 1.0a HBA in there?

Would the end result be x4 of 1.0a bandwidth available to me? Or since it's 2.0, will I somehow have x4 of 2.0 bandwidth (which the card is spreading across 8 lanes of 1.0a)? The former makes the most logical sense, but I'd love to be wrong :)

Compatibility of X10SL7-F with LSI SAS 9207-8i

I'm contemplating between two Supermicro main boards: X10SL7-F (with a onboard LSI2308) or X10SLM+-F (without).

If the former, I'd probably add 1 more LSI 2x08; if the latter, I'll add 2 x LSI 2x08 - to get a total of 16 SAS ports at the end of the day.

My question now is, are there any interop issues with X10SL7-F with any LSI 2x08 (IBM M1015 for example)?

I vaguely recall some mention of "fixed I/O addresses" of onboard LSI 2308 that conflicts with another LSI 2x08 that's on a card.

M5110e cachecade with SanDisk Drives

Hi,

I have an IBM X3650 M4 which has the embedded M5110e card. I have all the advanced feature keys installed. I am trying to use some consumer grade 240Gb Sandisk SDSSDX-240G drives with cachecade.

The card is perfectly happy with the drives when used as a normal vdisk but I can not enable cachecade with them. The option isn't greyed out in the MSM but when I open it none of the disks are listed. When I try the same using the BIOS I get an error saying the drives are missing an attribute. Drives are listed as SSD though.

I have no problems using these drives on our LSI branded cards.

Ive been looking at cross flashing options but cant really find anything for this card.

Anyone else out there had any luck enabling cachecade on this card using consumer grade SSD drives?

Cache 1GB, 512MB, 256MB: what difference does it make?

Hi forum-members,

I was looking for IBM M5015, but now I can get IBM M5014 (with iBBU) for quite good price. I' ready to go for it, but it has "only" 256MB of cache. I know M5015 has 512MB, and some LSI-models (9270?) even 1GB.

So I want to ask: Does it make a big difference? And if it does, in what scenarios?

BTW, I'd like to use it for moderately loaded ESXi (~20 VMs), 2 arrays: raid5 (4 HDD) and raid1 (2 SSD)...

LSI SAS9211 no Power Management options

I have a LSI SAS9211-4i that doesn't show the power management options in the MSM (13.04.03.01). I have a Dell Perc H310 in the same machine that does show the power management options.

Dell:

LSI:

Any ideas on how to get the power management options to show up in the LSI card?

I'm guessing if I flash the 9211 firmware onto the H310 that I'll lose that option?

IBM 5110 with 5016 Cache Vault

Hi guys,

So I got a IBM 5110 card with no cache for cheap on ebay the other day and I took the 1GB cache Vault module off my IBM 5016 and put it on the 5110.

Everything works fine. It booted and detected my Raid 5 and Raid 1 drives with no issue.

I updated the firmware on it and Cache Vault feature showed up in the MegaRaid Storage software.

Question:

-What are the advantages of 5110 over 5016 with my current setup? Is it only PCI 3.0 difference between the cards? Should I keep it this way or go back to 5016 setup? Any disadvantages over the 5016?

I do not have any feature keys installed. My Raid 5 has 3 SSD drives and my Raid 1 has 2 x 1TB 7.2K RPM SAS drives.

Thanks.

LSI 9212-4i4e HBA Help

Does any one experience with this HBA card ?? If yes I would like your help
before making a decision to buy this card.

For example: I have 2 SSD SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s), 2 Velocity Raptor SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s)
this card have 4 internal SATA Port, my question is:

(1) With this card, can I connect each of SSD in to port-0 and port-1
then using port-3 and port-4 config RAID-0 for 2 WD Velocity Raptor ???

(2) Can use this card as a boot device, for example connect a single SSD to one of its
SATA port (no RAID) then install window-7 and use it as a boot device for PC

Thanks in advance for your help

IBM m1015 (SAS9220-8i), error 8192, 'Chip is in FUSION mode'

I have IBM m1015 (SAS9220-8i) adapter (FRU 46M0861) which I'm trying to flash to LSI9211-IR follwing these instructions:

http://www.servethehome.com/ibm-serveraid-m1015-part-4/

But "megarec -writesbr 0 ..." gives me an error '8192 error' and also says 'Chip is in FUSION mode'.
"megarec -cleanflash 0" works though. Below URLs are for the photos of screen output from megarec.

I would really appreciate any hints on what could be the reason. I'm using ASROck Z77 Pro3 MB and this is a second M1015 card I'm trying to flash on this MB. First one went flawlessly and I'm using it with IT firmware under EXSi/Solaris but this new card (off eBay) is giving me issues.

Thanks,

LSI 9260-8i - poor random read/write performance with SSDs?

$

What sort of random read/write performance are people seeing with SSDs connected to the LSI 9260-8i?

I've been testing a *single* Plextor M5 Pro SSD on a Supermicro X9SRE-F:
1) Connected to the onboard SATA III controller in AHCI mode
2) Connected to the LSI 9260-8i in RAID 0 with no read-ahead or write caching

I ran a bunch of Iometer tests at queue depths ranging from 1-32 and found:
-- 4K Random Read: LSI card has 43-73% less IOPS than onboard
-- 4K Random Write: LSI card has 41-63% less IOPS than onboard

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

If anyone wants to run a quick comparison, I can post my Iometer .ICF file.

LSI 9211 doesn't expose 7 DVD drives in Win Server 2012?

$

I have a Dell server running Win Server 2012. The machine has a 9260 (genuine) in it for four internal SAS drives in RAID10, a PERC H800 running 8 4tb disks in RAID6 in an external enclosure, and a 9211-IT (also genuine) connected to an enclosure with 7 DVD burners and one hot-swap SAS bay. The 9211 is running the P16 driver for Win 8/2012 and the latest LSI firmware.

The odd thing is that Windows only appears to see 4 of the DVD drives and the hot-swap SAS bay (if occupied). Device Manager and Disk Management also only show 4 DVDs. MRM shows all the controllers and all of the drives (HDD and DVD) connected. The DVDs that Win sees work perfectly (including BDXL burns).

If I switch to IR firmware, all of the DVD drives become visible in Windows and MRM but writing DVDs gets flaky (reads are fine). I've also tried a cross-flashed M1015 but that was much worse (Dell plays with Dell and LSI but not with anyone else, it seems). I've also got a collection of PERC H310s, some with IT firmware and some with IR firmware (both from Dell). The PERC H310s have exactly the same issues as the 9211. I've tried the P16 drivers in WinPE 3.1 x64 as well. In IT mode, only three DVDs and the SAS bay are visible.

I have another external enclosure with 8 SAS bays, 4 DVD burners and an Intel SAS expander which I'm hoping to hang off a Dell workstation using a 9211 (the H310 in IR mode doesn't like the expander - I haven't tried one in IT mode) but it seems unlikely if I can't get the simpler configuration to work.

What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated (even if it does expose my lack of understanding!).

But is it possible to use more than one SAS Expander on a motherboard? Say for instance, using three 8 port expanders to connect a total of 24 drives?
